Here and There, 2024

Middle-aged women are not the prime subject for contemporary portraiture, which inspires me, as a 50-year-old mother of two, to strip and shoot.

My work combines photography and encaustic medium inside reclaimed wooden drawers. The fragmented self-portraits are presented as compartmentalized modular elements that can be mixed-and-matched to create emotionally charged moments juxtaposed with stillness. Some of the self-portraits are captured with motion to reflect an overwhelming energy of daily life. The photographic process of capturing my own image in action fosters a connection between conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind and emotions.

All of the drawers were found tossed out on garbage day in and around Boston, MA. Drawers hide things, they hold sheaths for the body, they speak of family and history, intimate moments, and then become forgotten trash. As boxes they hold me in as I'm trying to fit into the roles I'm supposed to be. Women can have it all, but at the expense of what parts? The drawers once were private places, now they are on display and reveal other things. All the images were photographed with an iPhone 11 and transferred via toner prints into encaustic, on latex, on wood..
