Here and There, 2024
are transferred into the beds of reclaimed wooden drawers that are pieced into towering, teetering structures, & irregular wall installations.
The drawers are not just boxes to fit into, but also spaces that were once private, now revealed & put on display. The self-portraits are unclothed in positions both revealing & protective, while the encaustic provides a muted sense of being.
The drawers also act as modular elements that can be reconfigured to create emotionally charged moments juxtaposed with stillness. Much of my work grows from the battle between yearning for one thing but doing another. The visceral quality of the imagery in the three-dimensional confined spaces speaks to other women & their thirst to be seen.
21st century middle-aged American women are unrecognizable in comparison to our matrilinear counterparts. As mothers we operate under the weight of home, work, & community while providing income, nourishment, management, recreation & transportation for our families. The expectation to succeed in every direction while balancing all the demands & to do so with abundant joy is ludicrous. But here we are.
My work is a visual representation of searching for balance between selfhood, womanhood, motherhood, working, & rest. Presented through the juxtaposition of empty spaces & fragmented self-portraits, overwhelm & exhaustion are expressed as the need to compartmentalize while forcing oneself to fit into each role.
